Arca dados is the official data repository for Fiocruz research. Its mission is to be the platform to archive, publish, disseminate, preserve and share digital data for research produced by the Fiocruz community and/or in partnership with other Institutes or research bodies, following the FAIR principles (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reusability).
Since 2017, the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) has been expanding the debate within the scope of Open Science, with an emphasis on managing, sharing and opening up data for research, outlining strategies for establishing structures, processes and standards for managing data arising from of scientific research at the Institution.
One of these results is the “Policy for managing, sharing and opening up data for research: principles and guidelines”, launched in 2020, which provides guidance so that data for research, as public goods, is made available in an open, ethical and complete manner. , accessible, in a timely and responsible manner, considering the strategic policies of national scientific research, institutional interests and current regulatory standards.
In the practical aspect, it became essential to consolidate a technological infrastructure for the implementation of the FIOCRUZ Research Data Repository – Arca dados, a platform for the management, sharing, opening and preservation of research data produced by Fiocruz, whose development was carried out by from 2019, based on a pilot project, developed in two phases.
Arca dados defines the following objectives: to stimulate the broad circulation of technical and scientific knowledge; encourage new research; provide transparency by ensuring the reproducibility or replicability of existing research; promote Open and Citizen Science; and foster collaboration between researchers, educators, academics, managers, postgraduate students, to advance knowledge and create solutions that meet society's demands.
Arca dados is chaired by the Management Committee of the Institutional Data Repository (Arcadados Management Committee), established by Fiocruz Presidency Ordinance No. 489, of September 20, 2021, being one of the governance bodies for Open Science policies, as set out in Fiocruz Presidency Ordinance No. 157, of May 12, 2021.
The ArcaData Steering Committee has a multidisciplinary structure coordinated by the Vice-Presidency of Education, Information and Communication (VPEIC), with joint coordination from the Institute of Communication and Scientific and Technological Information in Health (ICICT), with representatives from Vice− Presidency of Research and Biological Collections (VPPCB), of the Casa de Oswaldo Cruz (COC), of the General Coordination of Information Technology Management (COGETIC) and of the Coordination of Technological Management (GESTEC). It is the responsibility of this management committee to define the objectives, competencies, composition, responsibilities of its components and operation of Arca dados(1).
